When I founded RESLARC in 1995, it was with a simple but bold vision: to develop indigenous expertise in geospatial sciences and environmental intelligence at a time when such capabilities were almost entirely dependent on foreign institutions. What started as a modest ambition has since grown into a national mission to ensure that Nigeria, and Africa as a whole, lead in Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT), Earth Observation technologies, and spatial decision support systems.
Over the past three decades, RESLARC has transformed Nigeria’s approach to geospatial intelligence, pioneering the introduction of GEOINT into our defence and intelligence architecture. Through our efforts, geospatial intelligence has become recognized as one of the most powerful tools for understanding complex environments, guiding operational planning, strengthening national security, supporting governance, and informing strategic decision-making at the highest levels.
Our journey has been defined by persistence, innovation, and strategic collaboration. By partnering with national institutions, we have established operational GEOINT centres across key defence and intelligence agencies, including the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corps, Defence Intelligence Agency, Nigerian Air Force, Defence Space Administration, and the Independent National Electoral Commission. These centres have redefined how Nigeria collects, analyzes, and applies spatial information, creating capabilities that were previously unavailable in the country.
Since 2009, RESLARC has led Nigerian officers and professionals to global GEOINT platforms, including DGI London and the USGIF GEOINT Symposium. These engagements have exposed our personnel to cutting edge technologies, international best practices, and operational methodologies, ensuring that Nigeria not only keeps pace with global developments but becomes a reference point for GEOINT in Africa. Hundreds of officers have now returned with skills, insights, and networks that strengthen the operational capacity of our national security architecture.
RESLARC is more than a technology provider. We are builders of national capability, combining infrastructure, systems, human capital, and operational expertise to deliver integrated geospatial intelligence solutions. Through our RESLARC Academy, we continue to train the next generation of GEOINT specialists, ensuring that the country maintains a critical mass of indigenous experts capable of addressing national security, infrastructure protection, environmental challenges, and strategic development planning.
Today, geospatial intelligence is no longer optional; it is a strategic imperative for Nigeria. RESLARC’s continued commitment to indigenous innovation, capacity development, and technological sovereignty e nsures that the country can independently collect, analyze, and operationalize spatial data to meet the demands of national security, economic growth, and sustainable development. As we look to the future, RESLARC remains steadfast in its mission to expand Nigeria’s and Africa’s leadership in GEOINT, to build resilient and technologically sovereign national systems, and to ensure that spatial intelligence continues to be a decisive tool for national decision-making. The journey is ongoing, but the vision remains clear: a Nigeria that leads Africa, and Africa that thrives through geospatial intelligence.
